Using rdev

Sharing a preview

Show a site that runs on your server to someone outside your tailnet, such as a client or a teammate without access, with a temporary address and a password.

Share a site

On the server, in a terminal or through your agent:

rdev preview start shop --for 2h

It prints the address, such as https://rdev.tail1234.ts.net/, the user name preview and a password. Send them to the person you are sharing with; their browser asks for both. The preview stops by itself after the time you set (30m, 2h, up to 1d; one hour by default), or when you run rdev preview stop. rdev preview status shows the running one.

One site can be shared at a time; starting another stops the first. --no-password shares without a password, for content that is safe to be public.

How it works

The address comes from Tailscale Funnel on your own tailnet: visitors reach your server through Tailscale, never through rdev.cloud. A small proxy on the server asks for the password and passes the requests to shop.dev.test.

Funnel has to be allowed for your server once, in your tailnet's access controls: in the Tailscale admin console, add the funnel attribute to the server, or follow the link Tailscale shows when the preview cannot start. Previews need rdev 0.2.0-beta.16 or later.

Good to know

  • Anyone with the address and the password can use the site as you can: log in, submit forms, upload files. Share test data, not production data.
  • The site keeps its own settings. If its APP_URL matters (for example for links in emails), set it to the preview address while sharing.
