Using rdev

Develop from any device

Your laptop, desktop, tablet and phone are all just screens. The code, the services and the AI agents run on your server.

One server, every device

Every device reaches your server over your own Tailscale network. On each device, install the Tailscale app and log in with the same account your server uses. rdev never joins your network.

Laptop and desktop

On a Mac or Linux machine, run this in a terminal and follow Connecting your laptop:

curl -fsSL https://rdev.cloud/install | sh -s -- laptop

It sets up SSH (ssh rdev), name resolution for *.dev.test, a trusted certificate and Mutagen file sync of ~/Code. Then use any editor, such as VS Code or PhpStorm, and your usual browser.

The Windows app comes after launch. Until then a Windows machine can work like a tablet: an SSH client and the browser.

Tablet and phone

  1. Install Tailscale on your iPad, iPhone or Android device and log in with the same account.
  2. Install an SSH app, for example Termius or Blink Shell.
  3. Connect to your server's tailnet address as user dev.
  4. Start Claude Code or Codex in the terminal.

Use tmux on the server so your sessions keep running when you close the app. Agent notifications (job done, waiting for approval, error) reach your phone through your own channel, such as ntfy; see Notifications.

Opening your sites on a tablet or phone

To open https://<name>.dev.test on a tablet or phone, the device must resolve dev.test to your server, and trust the environment's certificate.

  1. In the Tailscale admin console, go to DNS > Nameservers > Add nameserver > Custom. Enter your server's tailnet IP address and restrict it to the domain dev.test.
  2. To avoid certificate warnings, copy the certificate from your laptop at ~/.config/rdev/ca.pem (it exists after rdev laptop connect) to the device, then install and trust it as a profile or certificate on iOS or Android.
