rdev needs a server, a laptop and a few accounts that stay in your name.
Server
You need a fresh Linux server from any provider. It can be a VPS, a VDS, a cloud instance or a dedicated machine, from Hetzner, DigitalOcean, Oracle, AWS or anyone else.
| Requirement | Details |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Ubuntu, Debian, Rocky Linux or AlmaLinux |
| Architecture | x86 or ARM |
| Size | At least 4 vCPU and 8 GB of RAM recommended |
| Software | Nothing; start from a fresh install |
You install nothing yourself, not even Docker. The rdev install command sets up everything it needs. Do not install a server control panel on the same server.
You rent the server and pay your provider directly. The rdev subscription does not include a server.
Laptop
At launch the rdev laptop app runs on Mac and Linux. Windows support will follow after launch.
You also need an editor, such as VS Code or PhpStorm, and a web browser.
Accounts you bring
rdev never holds these accounts for you. Each one stays in your name:
- Your server provider, where you rent and pay for the server.
- A Tailscale account for the private network between your laptop and your server. Tailscale's own plans and limits apply.
- An Anthropic and/or OpenAI account for the AI agents. Agent usage is billed by those providers and is not included in rdev's price.
On the Pro and Team plans, nightly backups go to an S3 bucket you own, so you also need an account with an S3-compatible storage provider if you want them.
